Pollard The brief was concerned with emotional and sustainable design. The project itself had to find uses for coppiced Chestnut from local forests. Research into local history allowed me to discover industrial uses for coppice wood, design styles and local identities all of which have been incorporated in some way into Pollard's design. Chestnut can not be made into a ply as it is liable to ring shake, but the design I wanted to create needed a flat, solid board. As part of the design process I created a composite lattice board constructed like a grid made from a finger jointed product from InWood Developments. The unit is flat pack. It slots together and is held in place by wedging anything you can find into the fix holes on either end. This encourages re-use of very disparate household objects, experimentation with different methods of fixing, or a trip to the woods to make some wooden stake wedges from coppiced Chestnut. |
