What is X-Flow

The X-Flow brake lever allows both individual and simultaneous control of the front and rear brakes of a mountain bike. This is achieved with dual-axis operation where pulling the lever operates one brake, pushing it down operates the other, and manipulating the lever on both axes gives front and rear stopping power. Specifically designed for retrofitting to existing hydraulic brake calipers, the lever caters to those wishing to participate in the more aggressive and technically demanding areas of mountain bike sports.

The Project

There are over 600,000 registered athletes with a disability in the developed world. Their physical limitations restrict them from engaging in certain sports and activites. As well as athletes with upper-limb disabilities, X-Flow used by physical rehabilitation patients, wounded service men and amputees. Able bodied riders also show interest as a neat alternative to dual sided controls. The project's focus was to explore the extremities of Inclusive Design practise.

The Details

X-Flow's lever, body, dual-axis linkage and unique drop-cylinder are CNC milled from 6061 Aluminium Billet. The unit is compatible with calipers that utilise a mineral oil hydraulic column and can offer a mechanical advantage of 5.3, with the inherent consistency and reliability of hydraulic operation. The lever assembly weighs an ultralight 212g (without fluid in the cylinders) so does not compromise balance of the bike.
